Familiar Strangers
by
Emma Kahm
Your mind is yours for twenty-five years. Then it belongs to the person you used to be.
Nick Morgan and Marek Kreek are total strangers who first meet at Bean & Leaf Haven, a nice coffee and tea shop, when Marek arrives there, seeking a gig as a guitarist. Immediately, Nick is struck by a sense of familiarity and accidentally embarrasses himself by ‘mistaking’ Marek for someone else.
However, what initially seemed like a random accident soon becomes a confusing reality. Nick discovers he knows facts about Marek that have never been shared and recalls events he never experienced. Nick can't explain how it's happening and is shocked to learn that Marek is experiencing the same thing. As if that's not weird enough, they realize they've both been dreaming about each other in a century-old setting.
Agreeing to investigate the mystery, Nick and Marek find themselves stuck in the confusing world of reincarnation. What kind of cycle allows souls to carry memories of a past life? In a state of desperation, they turn to Nick’s grandmother, Vera, a former religious scholar. With her guidance, they plan sessions of exposure therapy that will eventually lead them abroad—back to the very place where it all began.
